From Sample to Insight with QIAGEN

Who is QIAGEN & How Do They Support Curing Fatal Diseases?

The key to unlocking the cure for fatal diseases is hidden in three building blocks of the body: DNA, RNA, and protein. To deliver deeper insights into these life-building and life-saving molecules, scientists and researchers need access to high-throughput technologies. This pursuit of understanding the building blocks of the body has the potential to revolutionize the way diseases are diagnosed and patients are cured.

QIAGEN is one such company dedicated to unlocking the cure for fatal diseases and answering many of life’s questions through innovation in the healthcare sector. Its focus is providing solutions to doctors, scientists, lab directors, and many other healthcare and pharma professionals committed to answering the same questions.

QIAGEN was established in 1984 by three young scientists, Metin Colpan, Karsten Henco, and Jurgen Schumacher, and their doctoral supervisor Detlev Riesner. All four shared the same goal of supplying products that can give valuable molecular insights.

After its founding, the company introduced the first plasmid kit in 1986. Later, in 1996, it introduced the BioRobot 9600, its first benchtop workstation. That same year, it completed its initial public offering on the NASDAQ and became one of the first European companies to go public in an IPO.

QIAGEN’s holding company, QIAGEN N.V. is located in Venlo, the Netherlands. Currently, Thierry Bernard (Chief Executive Officer) leads the company with other executive members, including Roland Sackers (Chief Financial Officer) and five senior vice presidents who manage different business and operation areas.

Given below is a brief overview of recent major developments at QIAGEN:

  • 2016: QIAGEN acquired Exiqon A/S to unlock solutions to cancer and other diseases.
  • 2017: QIAGEN acquired OmicSoft Corporation and gained FDA regulatory approval for QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus.
  • 2018: QIAGEN partnered with NeuMoDx Molecular Inc., launched QIAstat-Dx point-of-care testing system, and transferred listing to the New York stock exchange (NYSE)—using ticker QGEN.
  • 2019: Acquired the digital PCR assets of Formulatrix, Inc., a developer of laboratory automation solutions.
  • 2020: QIAGEN put down the acquisition offer by Thermo Fisher Scientific (for 11.5 billion USD at that time) and bought 80.1% shares of euMoDx Molecular Inc.

This article covers the innovative products built by QIAGEN over the years and introduces you to the ways it’s helping scientists make breakthrough discoveries in different life sciences areas.
